Can You Hear Me Now? ๐ŸŽฅHollywoodโ€™s Transition from Silents to Sound ๐Ÿ”Š๐ŸŽ™๏ธ #OnDemand
At first, they were called "flickers" ... "actualities" ... and entertainment for "common folk." Then they grew in stature. Bold epics, poignant dramas, slapstick clowns - and MOVIE STARS!! So why did Hollywood then proceed to tamper with success and reinvent the wheel by adding sound? What did "talking pictures" do for both the art and the business sides of the film industry? And what does Singin' in the Rain have to do with it? Hey, we may not have much playing in movie theaters right now, but there's plenty of older stuff to discover. As Lauren Bacall famously said, "It's not an old movie if you haven't seen it."

Math+C: Mathematics through programming in the elementary grades ๐Ÿ’ญ ๐Ÿ’ป #OnDemand
Our NSF-funded project, Math+C, at Education Development Center, in partnership with the Waltham, MA, Public Schools, is developing a coherent integration of computer science (CS) ideas and skills into elementary mathematics, using programming as a language to help children express and explore mathematical ideas. The idea is that programming, used appropriately, can be a medium and language for mathematical and computational thinking, changing how children learn mathematics and helping develop and expose children's computational thinking. For teachers, it can offer opportunities to see childrenโ€™s thinking in new ways. We are investigating this idea, working closely with children and teachers in grades 2โ€“5.

His name is arguably even more famous than his legendary films. Dubbed "Hitch" by those who knew him, Alfred Hitchcock had an uncanny knack for tapping into his audiences' fears and hang-ups. Brilliant yet neurotic, witty yet droll, churning out classics ranging from Shadow of a Doubt and Rear Window to Vertigo and Psycho, he was a showman in every sense of the word. You'll learn some crazy stuff - not only behind-the-scenes anecdotes and fun facts, but also stories from his personal life that, when put all together, paint a vivid picture of a film director who knew how to make audiences simultaneously chuckle at his morbid sense of humor and squirm from suspense. You will walk away with a deeper appreciation for his work and have a "good ahf-tah-noon." (and you just read that in his voice)

A Year of Learning - Reflections with Justin Reich ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ˜ท
A Year of Learning - Reflections with Justin Reich
Join Nat Vaughn together with Justin Reich (co-founder of EdTech Teacher, educational researcher, and author of Failure to Disrupt: Why Technology Alone Canโ€™t Transform Education) for an engaging session as we explore, reflect, and discuss questions around our learning and experiences since March, 2020.  Justin has a long-standing relationship and has partnered with the Medfield Public Schools through his work with EdTech Teacher, working to help foster and nurture meaningful learning experiences in a systematic, coherent environment.
After a year of โ€˜forcedโ€™ alternative modes of education, it is incumbent upon us as educators to pause and take stock of  our experiences, lessons learned, practices we want to keep, practices we want to shift, and โ€˜resetโ€™ - What practices should we continue? What should we resume? Should we go back to โ€˜normalโ€™?  These are important conversations to be had - join us as we look to capture and archive the learning and map a path forward to support all of our learners.

Screentime: One district's effort to help students navigate the technology-infused environment in a way that is safe, effective, healthy, and well-balanced ๐Ÿ’ป
This presentation was initially planned for March 2020, but then COVID happened. The description below is the original from last year. Obviously, with remote/hybrid learning, screentime has taken on a whole new meaning. This year's presentation/discussion will be primarily focused on Westwood's assessment of screentime during pre-pandemic times, with adaptations as needed to include our experiences this school year.

Children are getting smartphones at much younger ages, some as early as third grade and most by sixth grade. At the same time, most schools have implemented 1:1 programs, resulting in a rapid transition towards the use of digital resources that have traditionally been paper-based. Because of these trends, schools are starting to grapple with the issue of screentime and how to strike a reasonable balance between online and offline learning activities. Parents are also trying to manage technology at home and looking for ways to encourage positive technology habits for their children.

For the reasons stated above, Westwood has identified a strategic priority to Expand Efforts to help students navigate the technology-infused environment in a way that is safe, effective, healthy, and well-balanced. In order to address this priority, the district has reflected on how things have changed in recent years, looked at current research about technology and its impact on children, and directly assessed students about their personal technology experiences.

Come learn about some of Westwoodโ€™s findings and some of the steps the district is taking to address this issue. This will be an interactive session - Iโ€™d love to hear how other districts are addressing this topic too!

Addressing Race and Equity in the Classroom: Sharing Resources ๐Ÿณ๏ธโ€๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŒŽ
I asked my classes this year when they first became aware of the concept of race. The overwhelming majority of them said in school when their elementary school teachers did lessons that addressed it specifically - the Native American experience, Martin Luther King Jr, and Rosa Parks. Teachers of all levels clearly have an important role to play in helping kids begin important conversations about race, but we can do a better job at sharing more varied and complex stories across our curriculum. I know we are all working at this, but there is so little time, especially now. I'm hoping to create some time and space, so we can all share materials and best practices and do some digging. I welcome teachers working with any grade level. We'll chat all together and then make some breakout rooms for grade and then subject alike groups to work together.

No More Waiting on the World to Change: Leveraging Technology to promote Global Citizenship & Advocacy ๐ŸŒŽ
In the hopes of applying both a local and global lens to the issue of economic inequality, my French IV students examined the end of Temporary Protected Status for Haitian recipients and the economic impacts of this status change on Boston Families. Using Adobe Post and Spark Video, they created advocacy posters and monologues in French from the perspective of children, parents, and business owners affected by the end of TPS. To prepare for this exhibit work, students canvassed predominately Haitian neighborhoods of Boston to hear their stories.

This year, my AP French students are using FlipGrid to virtually connect with our exchange school, Lycée Saint Marc, in Lyon, France where they are engaging in conversation about the impact of climate change in both cities. Here the emphasis has also been on collective and individual efforts to address global warming. My presentation will focus on the applications and online tools that I incorporate to prepare my students for this work and to get their projects "exhibition ready." Attendees will see samples of student work and gain access to rubrics, project guidelines, and playlists.

Student exhibitions were presented at the EMK Institute in Boston as a part of the 2019 Humanities Workshop. The 2021 Humanities Workshop on Climate Change will be fully virtual.

Developing Reflective Learners - Feedback, Assessments, and Beyond ๐Ÿ’ญ
After attending a two-day workshop on Assessment and Grading with Rick Wormeli in the fall of 2014, a team of educators from Blake Middle School returned with ideas, excitement, questions, and a concrete desire to provide actionable and meaningful feedback to our students. From this came a small pilot which has subsequently blossomed into a full scale school-wide initiative with all disciplines utilizing standards based reporting this year, 2019-20. Participation in our session will provide a framework (professional development, communication, and structures) for those seeking to learn, explore, and potentially implement Standards Based Reporting in their schools - shared from the perspectives of building-based leadership, department chairs, and teachers. We will outline successes, challenges, and the progress that lies ahead for our students and community.

Catch the Magic ๐ŸŒ ๐Ÿ”ฎ
Take a deep breath, clear your mind and think about your favorite book or story. Re-live the plot, mull over the theme and don't forget to connect with the characters.  Why do you love this book so much?  Now, stretch your mind and think about your book in a new way: What shape best represents this book or story: a square, a circle or a rectangle? Think about your thinking and explain why you picked that shape. You just caught the magic! Mark your calendars and join us to learn more ways to  "Catch the Magic".  A presentation where you can not only share your answer but also learn how to combine current technology, makerspace materials and best practices to promote students to think deeper and create engaged learners.  "Catch the Magic" is the story of how 3 teachers journeyed to find a better way for students to find success and showcase their thought process. You won't want to miss it!   (Oh by the way, I wonder why a triangle wasn't a choice for the story?)

We'll then dive into a definition of Maker Education the strategies Miscoe Hill Middle School has used in the development of our Inspired Innovation Center. We'll round out our session with a discussion of where participant groups are in their process of building a maker community and what next steps they could take. Breathe for Social Justice ๐Ÿง˜โ€โ™€๏ธ
Self Care is never a selfish act...
Any time we can listen to our true self and give it the care it requires, we do it not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose lives we touch -
Parker Palmer

Educators are most able to affect positive change when they take care of themselves first which allows them to embody and model a state of well-being for their students. Practicing mindfulness, acceptance, compassion, forgiveness, and gratitude allows us to show for each and every moment in our classrooms and our lives. This workshop is here for you to use in the way that best works for you.  Using mindfulness strategies including movement (think yoga) , this workshop is built on hopes and dreams that participants will consider that self compassion is essential to the process for collective wellbeing  - needed in your classrooms, moreover in our pursuit of justice and equity.  Of course I'll share strategies that can be used with students to bring about desired social emotional outcomes- but my goal today is to provide a well deserved opportunity for participants to take a moment to just be here and take care of yourselves. I can't wait to see you all on the mat (or in your chair... on the couch ... whatever works... you do you) !
